A trip to discover the traditional flavours of Abruzzo’s land: wine cellars, olive-oil press, pasta factories and typical restaurants, in a route to spend between the green hills of the Abruzzo’s hinterlands and the Gran Sasso uplands, to know the old farmer and shepherd traditions, in the beauty of nature and art.

 

 

 

1st Day:

Arrival in Abruzzo late in the morning. You will leave from Pescara Airport by Gran Turismo Coach and  accommodation in reserved rooms in an hotel situated near the coast. Lunch in hotel. Early in the afternoon leaving towards Serramonacesca where you’ll visit the 11th century Benedictine monastery of San Liberatore a Maiella, one of the most fascinating medieval churches of our Region, also because it is situated in a green wild valley, crossed by the Alento river (it is possible to follow its first spectacular way). The church was built completely out of local white limestone and has a beautiful three surface bell tower. Inside of it, is preserved the original floor mosaic. Later, you’ll visit a fine wine cellar where one of the best DOC wine is produced. Guided tasting. In the evening coming back in hotel, dinner and overnight stay.

 

2nd Day:

Breakfast in hotel and leaving towards the Abruzzo’s countryside where you will find interesting historic villages, amazing Romanesque churches and olive groves. Arrival in Moscufo to see the 12th century roman church of Santa Maria of the Lake . It is situated in a place considered sacred since the Pagan age and then linked to the Knights Templar. They have left strange witnesses and particular tales still told by the inhabitants of that area actually. Inside there is a polychrome pulpit of the 1159 a.D, the most beautiful medieval masterpiece of our Region. You will visit an oil press where the growers use only olives of the environs, there you will have a guided sample of their Aprutino – Pescarese DOP fine olive oil-Protected Denomination Origin..

You will arrive in Loreto Aprutino, an important medieval hamlet. In the rural area around it you will visit the 13th century church Santa Maria in Piano. Inside it there is a special 15th century painting, depicting The Last Judgement. This is the rare witness of ancient beliefs that represent the difference between the Catholic religion and some other eastern ones. You will have lunch in a typical restaurant in the town-centre. In the afternoon you will visit the centre of Loreto, situated on a hill where the sight runs from the Gran Sasso Mountain to the Adriatic sea . You will see the wonderful pottery collection of the Acerbo’s baron and you will be explained by the inhabitants the strange tale of the patron Saint and his weird celebration. Follows the visit of an old pasta factory where pasta is still produced with traditional methods. In the evening coming back in hotel, dinner and overnight staying.

 

3rd Day:

Breakfast in hotel and leaving towards the Gran Sasso National Park until reaching Campo Imperatore, a huge plateau 26 km long and 10 km wide at 1600 metres over the sea level. This place was considered magic by  Emperor Federico II, who gave it the name. It became popular also because Sergio Leone shot there his Western movies.

Follows the visit to Santo Stefano di Sessanio, one of the best preserved villages of the inner Abruzzo. It still has all the aspects of a fortified medieval hamlet. It has been owned by the Tuscany’s Aristocracy from the 500’s to the 700’s. Its strategic position was perfect for the wool traders, just under Campo Imperatore’s pastures. 

Lunch with typical menu in an old Franciscan monastery, today Restaurant and Hotel. In the afternoon there will be a demonstration of cheese production with traditional methods. Follows the visit of the 13th century abbey Santa Maria di Bominaco situated in the beautiful Navelli upland: it is the masterpiece of the medieval architecture, where you can find Benedictine elements with materials of roman style. The oratory was painted in the second half  of the 13th and we can see both the medieval and Renaissance art. Late in the afternoon coming back in hotel, dinner and overnight stay.

 

4th Day:

Breakfast in hotel and coming back by Gran Turismo coach to Pescara Airport .
