A
trip to discover the traditional flavours of Abruzzo’s land: wine
cellars, olive-oil press, pasta factories and typical restaurants,
in a route to spend between the green hills of the Abruzzo’s
hinterlands and the Gran Sasso uplands, to know the old farmer and
shepherd traditions, in the beauty of nature and art.
1st
Day:
Arrival in Abruzzo late in the morning. You will leave from
Pescara
Airport
by Gran Turismo Coach and accommodation
in reserved rooms in an hotel situated near the coast. Lunch in
hotel. Early in the afternoon leaving towards Serramonacesca
where you’ll visit the 11th century Benedictine
monastery of San Liberatore a Maiella, one of the most
fascinating medieval churches of our Region, also because it is
situated in a green wild valley, crossed by the Alento river (it is
possible to follow its first spectacular way). The church was built
completely out of local white limestone and has a beautiful three
surface bell tower. Inside of it, is preserved the original floor
mosaic. Later, you’ll visit a fine wine cellar where one of the
best DOC wine is produced. Guided tasting. In the evening
coming back in hotel, dinner and overnight stay.
2nd Day:
Breakfast in hotel and leaving towards the Abruzzo’s countryside where
you will find interesting historic villages, amazing Romanesque
churches and olive groves. Arrival in Moscufo to see the 12th
century roman
church
of
Santa Maria
of the
Lake
. It is situated in a place considered sacred since the Pagan
age and then linked to the Knights Templar. They have left strange
witnesses and particular tales still told by the inhabitants of that
area actually. Inside there is a polychrome pulpit
of the 1159 a.D, the most beautiful medieval
masterpiece of our Region. You will visit an oil press where the
growers use only olives of the environs, there you will have a
guided sample of their Aprutino – Pescarese DOP fine
olive oil-Protected Denomination Origin..
You will arrive in Loreto Aprutino, an important medieval hamlet.
In the rural area around it you will visit the 13th
century church Santa Maria in Piano. Inside it there is a
special 15th century painting, depicting The Last
Judgement. This is the rare witness of ancient beliefs that
represent the difference between the Catholic religion and some
other eastern ones. You will have lunch in a typical restaurant in
the town-centre. In the afternoon you will visit the centre of
Loreto, situated on a hill where the sight runs from the
Gran
Sasso
Mountain
to the
Adriatic sea
. You will see the wonderful pottery collection of the Acerbo’s
baron and you will be explained by the inhabitants the strange
tale of the patron Saint and his weird celebration. Follows the
visit of an old pasta factory where pasta is still produced
with traditional methods. In the evening coming back in hotel,
dinner and overnight staying.
3rd Day:
Breakfast in hotel and leaving towards the
Gran
Sasso
National Park
until reaching Campo Imperatore, a huge plateau 26 km long
and 10 km wide at 1600 metres over the sea level. This place was
considered magic by Emperor
Federico II, who gave it the name. It became popular also because
Sergio Leone shot there his Western movies.
Follows the visit to Santo Stefano di Sessanio, one of the best
preserved villages of the inner Abruzzo. It still has all the
aspects of a fortified medieval hamlet. It has been owned by the
Tuscany’s Aristocracy from the 500’s to the 700’s. Its
strategic position was perfect for the wool traders, just under
Campo Imperatore’s pastures.
Lunch with typical menu in an old Franciscan monastery, today Restaurant
and Hotel. In the afternoon there will be a demonstration of
cheese production with traditional methods. Follows the visit of
the 13th century abbey Santa Maria di Bominaco
situated in the beautiful Navelli upland: it is the masterpiece of
the medieval architecture, where you can find Benedictine elements
with materials of roman style. The oratory was painted in the second
