Along the Adriatic Coast , from Abruzzi to Apulia , to discover Mediterranean cultures and flavours, in unique places where the sun  mirrors on a crystal sea. Natural parks and Sea-reserves, Romanesque cathedrals, wonderful Basilicas,  striking Grottoes,  the famous "Trulli" and  Castles,  Churches built on rocky slopes, traces of Baroque art  to conclude with the white stone-town of Matera.

 

1st  Day: Arrival

Arrival in Abruzzo in the afternoon – Accommodation in a 3* Hotel. Dinner and overnight stay.

 

2nd Day:  Civitella Del Tronto – Atri

Breakfast in hotel and visit to the town of Civitella del Tronto , which is dominated by one of the biggest fortresses in Europe , settled in a wonderful panoramic position. This fortress, committed by King Charles 2nd is built on a pre-existent structure and has been the last bulwark of the Bourbon resistance against the Savoy. The town stretches on a hill lying at the foot of the fortress and has maintained its old town-planning establishment. Free time for lunch or on request in typical restaurant. In the afternoon you will reach the wonderful Atri, one of the most important Renaissance towns of Abruzzi. Rich in works of art, such as Cattedrale dell’Assunta, Palazzo Acquaviva, Chiesa degli Agostiniani and the colourful belvedere from which you can admire the Gran Sasso as well as the Adriatic Sea. Late in the afternoon coming back to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.

 

3rd   Day: Lanciano – San Giovanni in Venere

Breakfast in hotel and leaving by Gran Turismo Coach to the Southern part of the region.

Visit to Lanciano, one of the most interesting and ancient artistic towns in Abruzzo. You will see the famous cathedral of St. Maria del Ponte, the church of St. Maria Maggiore, and the church of St. Francesco, well-known all around the world because of the so-called Eucharistic miracle, one among the few officially acknowledged by the Church. Free dinner or on request in typical restaurant. In the afternoon you will continue the tour driving  along the so called Costa dei Trabocchi, a sort of pile work huts scattered along the coastline, once  used for fishing. Then you will move to the countryside to visit a striking panoramic point: the complex of the Abbey of San Giovanni in Venere. The church devoted to San Giovanni was built on the ruins of an ancient Venus’ pagan temple. The Romanesque style of the architecture is enriched by decorative elements of the Byzantine tradition. Late in the afternoon coming back to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.

 

4th  Day: Trani – Castel Del Monte

Breakfast in hotel. Driving along the Adriatic coast towards Apulia , you will admire the intact panorama of the Gargano promontory , with its amazing beaches and crystal waters. Arrival in the medieval town of Trani . You will walk in the heart of the enchanting old-Town and visit the well-known “Queen of Apulia”: the Romanesque cathedral of San Nicola Pellegrino, that stretches on a line of land spreading into the sea. Free lunch or on request in a typical Masseria next to the town. The tour will later continue towards the countryside to reach the famous octagonal castle of Castel Del Monte , built on a isolated hill of the Murge, where it is possible to enjoy a unique panoramic view. In the evening accommodation in a 3* Hotel in Bari . Dinner and overnight stay.

 

5th  Day: Alberobello – Castellana Grottoes

Breakfast in hotel and departure to Alberobello, chief-town of the worldwide famous  Trulli. These very original houses are made out of white calcareous stone- blocks, with the typical conical roof.

You will take a walk in the two monumental districts of this unique town, looking about this unconventional buildings with such a strange kind of roof.

Alberobello has received an  acknowledgement as Unesco World Heritage. Free lunch or on request in a typical Masseria next to the town. In the afternoon visit to the Castellana Grottoes, a nature work of art, divided into several rooms, where ancient calcareous concretions have created

unexpected and striking rocky formations during the centuries. In the evening, coming back to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.

 

6th  Day: Matera

Breakfast in hotel. Leaving by Gran Turismo coach and visit to Matera, one of the most striking towns in Europe, of very ancient origins. The old town lies on a rocky slope, whose houses called “ Sassi” are made out of stone. For centuries they have been interlacing in a sort of mysterious labyrinth. In these last years Matera has become very popular to its visitors from all around the world thanks to “the Passion”, the colossal-film directed by Mel Gibson, whose many scenes where shot in the setting of the Sassi. Free time for lunch during the excursion. In the evening coming back to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.

 

7th Day: Bari

Breakfast in hotel and visit to the beautiful Byzantine  town of Bari , the chief-town of the region. You will walk through the colourful alleys in the centre, that recall the past and lead to the imposing Basilica of St. Nicola, the first and most important example of Apulian Romanesque style. Inside the crypt the relics of St. Nicola are preserved, the patron saint of  sailors.

Free time for lunch or on request  in a restaurant, then leaving in the afternoon to reach the Sanctuary of St. Padre Pio da Pietralcina, the place where the holy monk lived and where he worked out miracles. Free time for individual visits and activities. Coming back to Abruzzo airport.
